Division Descriptions

Divisions

Competitors will compete against themselves using his/her skills to break a board. Awards will be given based on execution. 1st place awarded if the board is broken on the first attempt, 2nd place awarded if the board is broken on the second attempt, and 3rd place awarded when board is broken on 3 or more attempts. Competitor can choose a hand or kicking technique of their choice. Judges will be responsible for holding the boards.

Simulated sparring with each competitor having flags placed in his/her belt. The objective is to take the colored flags from the opponent while preventing your flags from being taken. Promotes an understanding of space and distance as well as speed and timing. This is a non-contact division with no safety equipment required. Division is setup as a sparring bracket. One 30-second round. Winner is determined by who has collected the most flags from the other competitor. Award placement for 1st, 2nd, and the two tied for 3rd. Only offered to all ranks ages 10 and under.

Competitors will compete against themselves using his/her skills to break a board while executing a flying side kick. Awards will be given based on execution. 1st place awarded if the board is broken on the first attempt, 2nd place awarded if the board is broken on the second attempt, and 3rd place awarded when board is broken on 3 or more attempts. Judges will be responsible for holding the boards.

Simulated Kickboxing Continuous Sparring on a Wavemaster bag. Division is setup as a sparring bracket. Two competitors at a time compete on separate Wavemaster bags each executing the required techniques. One 30-second round. The judges point to determine the winner. Award placement for 1st, 2nd, and the two tied for 3rd. Judging will be based on six qualities of a champion.

Controlled contact sparring. Division is setup as a sparring bracket. Matches are two 45-second rounds with a 30-second break in between. Competitors must use two technique exchanges. Judge will break the competitors after each exchange. Judges point to determine the winner of each round. In the event of a tie another 30-second tie-breaker round will be held. Judges will point to determine the winner of the tiebreaker. Award placement for 1st, 2nd, and the two tied for 3rd. Judging criteria will focus on proper execution of the techniques, allowable target areas, control, and speed. Techniques must be properly chambered. Competitors will receive a single warning per match for excessive contact, avoiding the fight, illegal contact, or poor sportsmanship. Any additional infraction will result in loss of the round. Competitors must wear approved headgear, face shield (youth only), groin cup, chest guard, gloves, foot pads, shin pads, and elbow pads (adults only).

Two competitors at a time compete using separate Wavemaster bags. Competitors may use as many of the PMA combative striking techniques as they wish. Krav Maga combatives should include some, but not necessarily all the following techniques, Jab, Cross, Hook, Uppercuts, any of the 7 Elbows strikes, any of the three Hammer Fist strikes, knee strikes, and any kicking techniques. Students are urged to make up a routine of their own including their favorite combatives and repeat their routine continuously until the 30-second round has expired. Students will be judged on the six qualities of a champion, Speed, Power, Focus, Intensity, Accuracy, and Excellence. One 30-second round. Division is setup as a sparring bracket. Students will be judged on the six qualities of a champion, Speed, Power, Focus, Intensity, Accuracy, and Excellence. The judges point to determine the winner. Award placement for 1st, 2nd, and the two tied for 3rd.

Competitors will be allowed to create his/her own form incorporating PMA techniques as well as other martial arts skills and tumbling. There are no requirements nor restrictions with respect to the techniques utilized. These forms must capture the essence of martial arts movements, displaying proper techniques, stances, and footwork. Emphasis is placed on execution of technique, creativity, difficulty, balance, speed, power, solid stances, and focus. No props are allowed. Judges will watch all competitors perform and will score all competitors at the end. Order of competition will be determined by a random draw. There is a 2-minute time limit. The maximum deviation rule and tie breaking rules will be automatically applied via the Uventex system. The judges will utilize a scoring range of 9.90 to 9.99. Only intermediate ranks and above are eligible to compete in this division.

Competitors will be allowed to create his/her own weapons form incorporating PMA techniques as well as other martial arts skills, manipulations, releases, and tumbling. There are no requirements nor restrictions with respect to the techniques utilized. These forms must display proper techniques, stances, and footwork. Emphasis is placed on execution of technique, creativity, difficulty, balance, speed, power, solid stances, and focus. No props are allowed. Weapons cannot be manipulated using magnets or other similar items. Weapons must be performance-based and cannot include sharpened or live blades or tips. Judges will watch all competitors perform and will score all competitors at the end. Order of competition will be determined by a random draw. There is a 2-minute time limit. The maximum deviation rule and tie breaking rules will be automatically applied via the Uventex system. The judges will utilize a scoring range of 9.90 to 9.99. Only intermediate ranks and above are eligible to compete in this division. Dropping the weapon will result in a downgrade by the judges.

Simulated sparring utilizing padded swords. This is a contact-based division requiring competitors to wear approved headgear, face shield (youth only), groin cup, and chest guard. The objective is to score points by hitting allowed target areas on the opponent. It is a point-based division, so the judges will award points to the competitor who earns the point first. Two of the three judges must identify a point for it to count. This division is not continuous, and the competitors will return to the start position after each exchange. Division is setup as a sparring bracket. One 45-second round. Winner is determined by who scores the most points. Ties broken by next point wins. Award placement for 1st, 2nd, and the two tied for 3rd.

Competitors will compete using the applicable PMA curriculum form based on rank level. Judges will watch all competitors perform and will score all competitors at the end. The order of competition will be determined by a random draw. There is a 2-minute time limit. The maximum deviation rule and tie-breaking rules will be automatically applied via the Uventex system. The judges will utilize a scoring range of 9.90 to 9.99. Judging will be based on six qualities of a champion.

Competitors will compete using the applicable PMA curriculum weapons form based on rank level. Beginner ranks will have the opportunity to compete in separate divisions for Bo Staff and Nunchucku. Intermediate ranks and above will choose his/her preferred weapon and perform the applicable PMA weapons form with all weapons competing in a combined division. Judges will watch all competitors perform and will score all competitors at the end. Order of competition will be determined by a random draw. There is a 2-minute time limit. The maximum deviation rule and tie breaking rules will be automatically applied via the Uventex system. The judges will utilize a scoring range of 9.90 to 9.99. Judging will be based on six qualities of a champion. Dropping the weapon will result in a downgrade by the judges.

Two-person team division with a two-minute time limit. Competitors will execute the PMA grab and escape techniques. Each competitor must perform 3 different self-defense techniques and perform them two times each in a row, then move on to the next. Typically performed in a choreographed manner with role-playing with a partner. Partner must be in same age and rank grouping. Only the competitor executing the self-defense techniques will be scored. Judges will watch all competitors perform and will score all competitors at the end. Order of competition will be determined by a random draw. Judging will be based on the six qualities of a champion. Scoring range is 9.90 to 9.99.
